Making an Impact

New Zealand Design Education:

Your leadership purpose is who you are and what makes you distinctive. It’s not what you do, it’s how you do your job and why—the strengths and passions you bring to the table no matter where you’re seated. Although you may express your purpose in different ways in different contexts, it’s what everyone close to you recognises as uniquely you and would miss most if you were gone.

Demelza Round is the Head of Technology and Design at Tangaroa College. Already, she has been recognised for uniqueness to  create her own leadership identity  and  is motivated by the power of making (in all fields) and social equity. She believes in empowering students to make tangible positive changes to their worlds through design. Tangaroa College & COVID-19 Level 3

Dear Parents and Families,

As you are aware, the Prime Minister has confirmed that New Zealand will now move into Alert Level 3 effectively from Monday 27th of April.  This includes all schools from childcare centres, primary age group and secondary schools ONLY for Year 9 and Year 10 students .

  • Tangaroa College will continue to provide distance learning for your child from Thursday 23rd to Friday 24th of April.
  • Teaching staff will contact your child to ensure they are able to attend online classes.
  • Teachers only days will be organised for the 28th and 29th of April. This is to plan a new learning timetable that is  aligned to the Ministry of Education guidelines due to  Covid -19.

The principles of Level 3 lockdown recommends to work and learn from home ONLY if you can.

If this is not an option due to work commitments, the school will be open for your child to attend under strict learning guidelines. All other students must stay home.

The school has worked tremendously hard to try and close the equity gap for students that have  no device or internet connection from home. In support from the Ministry of Education, these students will be getting their device delivered to their homes very soon. A priority is the senior students that are enrolled in NCEA subjects.

With your assistance, there is still a large number of students that were not contacted because of incorrect phone numbers and email addresses. Please call the school immediately on 092745764 or leave a clear message of your child’s name with their new details Or you can email:  office@tangaroa.school.nz, alternatively you may log in to the parent portal to adjust your details.

The first day for students will commence on Thursday 30th April at 9am, and the school gate will be locked at this time. Unfortunately, students who are late will not be able to enter the school premises. This is to manage the bubbles inside of our school and to reduce the spread of Covid -19 for students and staff.

Students attending school will be organised into groups to ensure the guidelines and rules of social distancing and limited social interaction is maintained. So what this means for children returning to school:

  • Online learning will continue and students will be organised into small groups and supervised while they are online learning.
  • Students will be able to order lunch through https://www.txtmylunch.co.nz/
  • Students will not be allowed to leave school to buy lunch at the shops
  • Parents will not be allowed to drop lunches off to school, so please ensure your child has lunch
  • Breaks will be monitored, they will be shorter, and students will not be allowed to play team activities during morning tea and or lunch time ensuring that social distancing is maintained.
  • If your child is sick please do not send them to school as they will be sent home.
  • If you require to speak to any staff member please call before you come into school and an appointment time will be given for you to meet.
  • School begins at 9am and finishes at 3.05pm. The school grounds will be cleared- if you are unable to collect your child immediately after school please let the school know of a pick up time and we will ensure they wait in the admin area.
  • The park areas  will also be cleared by police so it is important  students go home immediately after school. We need your cooperation on ensuring they return home immediately.

If  you require further support for your child, please don’t hesitate to contact the school. I have included names of staff members that might be helpful to you.

Be safe and take care,

Davida Suasua
Principal

Devices from the Ministry Of Education

Over the last few weeks, Tangaroa College staff have been contacting our students homes enquiring on the accessibility their school age children have to the internet and devices. As part of the COVID-19 Education Package, the government has approved 300 devices for Tangaroa College students. These have been sent directly to the homes of students. If your child has received a device please email office@tangaroa.school.nz.

Please email the school office if your contact details have changed.

Keep safe and keep well

Kind regards

Integrated Curriculum

Celebrating success; our student centred approach.

This year we are trialling something new with our Year 9 options subjects; an integrated curriculum.Curriculum integration is about connecting knowledge and experiences between subject areas. This is quite different from what students did in the 1960s or the 1970s. One of the most powerful ideas as a teacher is seeing learning happen when students make sense of ideas in relation to what they already know. Our hope is to put the students in the center of their learning, connecting to what they already know and issues they feel passionate about. As we know, the world keeps changing and so we must prepare our students to be adaptable in order to change with it. Tangaroa College wants to empower it’s students to act and tap into their culture, creating meaningful opportunities for every student. With a national school shutdown, perhaps this the opportunity to share some of the learning experiences so far from our integrated subjects.

The theme for Term One was an exploration of ‘Whakapapa’ or family. Students in the Visual Arts, Dance and Drama investigated ‘How might we explore Whakapapa through the Arts?  While students in Business and Technology asked ‘How might we explore Whakapapa through future focused food?

Here are some of our students work from Year 9 Art class: Ms Patsy Fata  & Year 9 Digital Technology class : Mrs Yong Ai Sim

Easter, School Holidays and Term 2 Online Classes

Term 1 Holiday Break and Easter – Friday 10 April – Wednesday 22 April 2020
First Day of Term 2 on-line contact – Thursday 23 April and Friday 24th April

Dear Tangaroa College Community,

As we draw to a close of Term 1 for 2020, the landscape is not the same. We are used to seeing the excitement and energy in our students and teachers as they finish the day, the term, looking forward to the holidays ahead. Whilst many of the teachers have the ability to see their classes through online platforms, having that physical presence is something that cannot be replicated. It does not mean however that we are not thinking of them, or wishing them well for the holidays ahead, so with that I have some messages to share.

The Ministry of Education has received data from us of students who do not have devices and or internet, you will be informed once more information becomes available.

School will return to online classes on the 23rd & 24th April 2020. Please note we require the students to attend online lessons as schools in our country will remain closed until the Ministry of Education instructs us to be open, this date is unknown.

We are proud of our students who have continued to attend their online classes – reports back from teachers is the vast majority of you are working hard and responsibly.

Know we are here for you. You will always have us, so feel free to reach out.

Make sure you’ve familiarized yourself with our online Pastoral Care Support or contact paumeam@tangaroa.school.nz, grahamj@tangaroa.school.nz, juliet@tangaroa.school.nz

Feedback – our parent survey will be sent out next week for our online learning programme, this is not a self-congratulating model. We need to test our functionality’s and your honest responses that will allow targeted improvements to be implemented. We cannot do this alone so we need to ensure what we are doing collectively best serves our children during this difficult time.

Stay safe, be kind to each other and know we are all in this together.

Davida Suasua

Assistance with groceries

Aucklanders who are unable to afford groceries or are in self-isolation with no access to other support networks can call Auckland Emergency Management on 0800 22 22 96 between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week.

Anyone who meets the government’s eligibility criteria will be couriered a welfare parcel containing items such as dry goods including pasta and rice, tinned vegetables and meats and basic toiletries.

The first courier parcels are expected to be dispatched at the end of this week. A distribution centre is currently being set up with staff being trained in health and safety provisions for warehousing work, under COVID-19 guidelines.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the programme supports the national efforts to ensure those who are experiencing hardship due to COVID-19 can meet their essential needs.

“While most Aucklanders are continuing to shop normally for their essential products, there are a small number of people facing real hardship and who need greater support. Through this programme, we can ensure that nobody in our community goes hungry, and that the staple supplies they rely on are available to them.

“Our customer services call centre staff, who are trained to deal with a wide range of situations, currently have capacity to take on extra duties due to the lockdown.

“We will also be working with local foodbanks to see how we can assist them to meet demand from people facing financial hardship.”

“We acknowledge the support of organisations like Countdown and Spark Arena to help us plan this response. In the coming days we will be able to provide more details about how this has been pulled together, who is involved and how packages are being delivered,” he says.

If you are unable to afford groceries or are in self-isolation with no access to other support networks, you can phone Auckland Emergency Management on 0800 22 22 96 between 7am and 7pm, every day from Wednesday 1 April. Parent’s Guidelines to Google Classrooms

Stay Connected

With school closures, teaching at Tangaroa College are continuing to keep their lessons going remotely.

Concerns over the transmission of COVID-19 are closing schools across the globe, and millions of students are unable to physically attend school.  In our hub of Otara, we are encouraging our parents to support their child’s learning online and to continue their schooling remotely from home.

All students are connected through a learning platform known as ‘google classroom’.  If you would to like to access  ‘how’ you can stay connected, please click here: 2020 Parents’ Guide to Google Classroom pdf
